UTS climbs to 7th in Australia

The University of Technology Sydney has secured its place among Australia's top universities, climbing to 7th in the nation and 145th globally in the 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. This is more than a number; it's a measure of real-world impact.

Global university rankings are a key indicator of an institution's influence, assessing everything from research quality to industry collaboration. For a university driven by technology and innovation, these rankings reflect a deep commitment to creating tangible change.

A new measure of excellence

This achievement marks a significant step for UTS, placing it firmly in the company of Australia's most respected universities.

The university’s continuous rise is powered by its strong performance across several key areas. The 2026 Times Higher Education rankings highlighted exceptional results in:

  • Research quality: UTS now ranks 2nd in Australia and within the top 50 worldwide for research quality. This reflects the global influence and excellence of the university's research programs.
  • Industry connection: Stronger ties with industry partners ensure that education and research at UTS are grounded in practical application, solving real-world problems.
  • International outlook: A globally-focused approach to teaching and collaboration continues to attract diverse talent and perspectives, enriching the university community.

This result mirrors other major global rankings this year, including the 2026 QS World University Rankings, where UTS entered the world's top 100 universities and was ranked first in Australia for research excellence.

Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Andrew Parfitt celebrated the news as a testament to the community's hard work, especially during a challenging time for the university sector.

"Our world-class expertise in disciplines ranging from artificial intelligence to nursing or delivering practical solutions with industry such as construction robots or coral reef restoration, are all examples of what we can be proud of at UTS,” he said.

What this means for our community

A higher global ranking isn't just about prestige; it creates real opportunities.

For students, it means a degree from UTS carries even greater weight in the global job market. It signals an education that is not only academically rigorous but also deeply connected to the industries shaping our future.

For our academics and researchers, this recognition fuels further innovation. It attracts world-class talent and opens doors to new partnerships, allowing our research to make an even greater impact—from local communities to global challenges.

The future is what we make it

This milestone is not a finish line. It's a launchpad.

It reaffirms our commitment to being a leading public university of technology, where creativity and innovation drive progress. As we look ahead, we continue to focus on creating practical solutions and fostering the next generation of leaders and thinkers. The work of the UTS community is what defines our success, and it’s this collective effort that will continue to shape what’s next.
