UTS leads Australia in global sustainability rankings

The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) continues to cement its reputation as a leader in driving meaningful societal and environmental change. Recently ranked 3rd globally—and 1st in Australia—in partnerships supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), UTS has demonstrated its commitment to impactful industry, government, and community collaborations.

A global leader in sustainable partnerships

The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for 2025 recognised UTS for its remarkable ability to work alongside international organisations, government bodies, and private companies to create solutions addressing the SDGs. Key categories in which UTS excelled include:

  • Responsible Consumption and Production (ranked 19th globally)
  • Climate Action (39th)
  • Decent Work and Economic Growth (39th)
  • Clean Water and Sanitation (49th)

These rankings place UTS among the very best globally, outpacing numerous institutions in fostering innovation and sustainability.

Creating impact through collaboration

UTS’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andrew Parfitt, attributes the university's success to its dedication to purposeful partnerships. "Meaningful progress happens when we work with our partners to create a more inclusive society today and a more sustainable environment for the future," Parfitt states.

Some standout initiatives exemplify this collaborative drive:

  • Water, sanitation, and hygiene policy development in Asia-Pacific
By partnering with non-government organisations and private sector entities, UTS is advancing better sanitation policies and practices.
  • Adaptation research network in climate disaster response
As part of the Living Lab Northern Rivers, UTS contributes to the development of knowledge and solutions addressing climate-related disasters.
  • Integrating climate change and disaster risk reduction
UTS’s evaluation of TransformAid International programs focuses on reducing poverty and injustice worldwide while addressing climate and disaster resilience.

Why UTS stands out

UTS's commitment goes well beyond research excellence. It is one of the first Australian universities to formally pledge support for the UN SDGs. This proactive approach showcases its dedication to real-world impact, not just academic achievements.

The university’s ability to seamlessly integrate industry-driven solutions with educational expertise highlights its unique value proposition. Whether improving global water quality or advancing policies for equitable economic growth, UTS’s work proves that strategic collaboration is key to changing the world for the better.

UTS is redefining what it means to be a university in the 21st century. By prioritising sustainability and global collaboration, it continues to inspire and lead industries, communities, and individuals towards a brighter, more sustainable future.
